Long may your big jib draw

It has been so long now since we boarded a plane, going anywhere. The last time I think was our trip back from Florida at the end of our 2019 cruise.   But that all changed this week as we headed to “the Rock” for our first vacation in some time.  The Gang has descended on the shores of Newfoundland for a week of sightseeing, visiting new friends, celebrating, and having many kitchen parties.  Landing in Deer Lake, we were met by the smiling faces and hardy Newfoundland welcome of Trudy, Alma and Dorman.  They had just drove three hours from Port-aux-Basques to pick us up and were now shuttling us down to Margaree for a week of Newfoundland hospitality.  The views are like postcards, the people are so welcoming, and the food is amazing. I think in the few short days we have been here we have checked out many of the east coast classics. Lobster, Salt Beef, Fish Cakes, Fish and Chips, and I know there is still dried cod yet to come (a request I made). Darren has been the chef, tour guide, driver, storyteller, and innkeeper as both he and Trudy opened their house to us for this visit. (we really can’t thank them enough).   Each night has been a dinner party in true Newfoundland fashion of family, friends and strangers getting together in the garage for laughter, darts, and of course music and singing.  Our stay is not over yet, and we have a few more days to enjoy but I think when we head back to Ontario, we are going to miss our Atlantic Canada friends and look forward to extending our hospitality to them.

If anyone is wondering, thanks to Boyd, Millie and that fresh cod fish, we are now Honorary Newfoundlander and have been Screeched in.

Rose Blanch Lighthouse

Tourist Note:  If you find yourself in Port aux Basque there are a few places to check out.
For a great meal you need to stop into
Alma Family Restaurant. Its worth the drive to Rose Blanche to see the Lighthouse, and while there stop into the stain-glass store in the town and you will surely find something to bring home with you.
