Reflections of our Fireside weekend
Dear Faithful Companion,
Our cottage trip to the Kawartha Lakes was everything we hoped it would be: a chance to reset, reconnect, and truly unwind. Tucked away in the peaceful Peterborough countryside, the four-bedroom authentic log cabin radiated the charm of a century-old treasure—the kind of place that carries the whispers of time in its timbered walls. Heated by a wood-burning stove, the cabin offered warmth in both atmosphere and spirit. With its spacious living areas, a full kitchen, and three bathrooms, it provided the perfect balance of rustic elegance and modern comfort.
The journey began with a delightful stop in Peterborough for a light lunch and some exploration. There’s a certain magic in taking the time to soak in the character of a new town. We strolled its charming streets, indulged in local flavors, and picked up a few treats to savor over the weekend. It was a prelude that set the tone for the sanctuary awaiting us.
Beckie and Andrew, along with Jeff and Gary, brought their dogs along, adding a lively and joyous energy to the group. The dogs seemed to embrace the new surroundings, their wagging tails a testament to the adventure. Sadly, Austin couldn’t join us this time due to illness, and his absence was deeply felt. We’re already planning another cottage weekend later this year to ensure he can join us—and, of course, for our annual group photo.
The weekend unfolded in a delightful rhythm of shared laughter, games like oversized Jenga and Monopoly, and the enjoyment of wonderful wine. These simple pleasures remind us of why we take the time to unplug and focus on what truly matters. Jesse and I took some time on both Saturday and Sunday to explore the nearby communities of Peterborough and Lindsay, each just a short drive away. It gave us a little space to ourselves, and exploring new parts of Ontario always feels like uncovering hidden treasures. Both days, we found ourselves at local brew houses, savoring creative cocktails and delicious snacks. These small excursions added an extra layer of adventure to the weekend.
Jeff and Jesse, our ever-reliable fire keepers, ensured the wood-burning stove stayed ablaze, filling the cabin with a comforting glow. It’s a task they both relish, and their efforts kept the space cozy throughout our stay. There’s an unspoken understanding within our group: everyone plays a role in creating the perfect weekend. From cooking meals to pouring wine, cleaning up, and even stacking firewood, the harmony of our contributions made the experience seamless.
The weekend’s crisp winter air added to its charm, giving us exactly the atmosphere we had envisioned. One of the most memorable moments was sitting out in the hot tub under the dead of night. The silence of the world around us, interrupted only by the occasional crackle of the fire or a dog’s playful bark, made for a truly remarkable memory. On Monday morning, as we packed up and prepared for the journey home, the bittersweet feeling of leaving was softened by the thought of the memories we had created together.
Verbum Ultimum: "The warmth of friendship outshines even the coziest fire; in the presence of true camaraderie, the soul finds its home." This wasn’t just a weekend getaway; it was a celebration of friendship and the kind of connection that deepens with each shared moment. It reminded me how essential it is to prioritize these bonds, to laugh together, to explore together, and to cherish the simple joys that life has to offer.
Until next we meet, with ink as my witness and virtue as my guide.
